Through a box of sweets, Un tiempo espléndido contrasts the dualistic and anthropocentric worldview of modernity—which places nature outside the human—with cultural and symbolic elements that reveal different societies’ fascination with the vegetal world.

The project takes the Botanical Garden of the University of Valencia as its starting point: a space that brings together multiple landscapes within the intimacy of a garden while also articulating a network of activities devoted to the study, conservation, dissemination, and sustainable use of biodiversity. A place for contemplation and knowledge.

The work began with a series of attentive walks through the garden, understood as a way of approaching and connecting with the surrounding environment. During these walks, plants of gastronomic and sensory interest were documented, together with references and symbols associated with the vegetal world.

Based on these observations, six sweets were designed, drawing both on subjective impressions of the garden and on research into different imaginaries associated with plants. The sweets are presented in a recycled cardboard box wrapped in linen and silk fabrics dyed with plant-based substances and scented with lemon verbena.

The experience was presented on September 22, 2021, as part of a workshop at the Navarra Gastro Summit in Pamplona. The workshop combined a discussion on sensory experience and ecological art practices from a gastronomic perspective with a tasting of the sweets. During the tasting, the different chapters of the artistic video inspired by each sweet were screened, creating an immersive experience around the garden, its species, and their associated imaginaries.
