Fasting Girls

2026

Gastronomic performance development in Marta Azparren’s performative conference.
Fasting Girls proposes a cartography of the relationship between voluntary fasting and images: from the Victorian “fasting girls” who performed their fasting inside glass cases in restaurants, to contemporary fasting girls feeding on Mukbang videos.

The project reconsiders voluntary fasting not so much as a clinical diagnosis of an individual illness, but as a collective symptom of the contemporary tendency to disappear into images. It explores the possibility of images feeding hybrid pixel-flesh bodies—bodies saturated with images yet empty of food.

The scenography of Fasting Girls unfolds across several layers: projections, actions, sonic and gastronomic experimentation, live visuals, and testimonies. It is articulated through three intuitions:

images feed us,

hunger generates images,

and images devour us.
